Snowy River

A collaboration. The church was done in two flat elevation views back and side) by a very talented colleague. I then stitched them together in this perspective version and painted the rest of the BG.

Location Pitches

A couple of "location" pitches.
For me the key was conflict and danger, get the characters in peril and their true character would emerge. Writing a few pages of story to go with these I hoped would loosen the log-jam of a stalled story.

Lilo & Stitch layout

Found another layout from L&S.

City Blues On the Move

I took one of my pieces, built some FG elements in Maya and loaded in the flat art behind it.
A quick test with the Maya camera, then saved out as a QT. It makes the point.

Mulan

There used to be an interesting phrase I'd hear around the WDFAF studio, and at first didn't understand.
Then someone used it to describe this layout I did on Mulan,"Line mileage".
Lots of work, but fun stuff.
How many Col-erase, Indigo's were killed during the making of this film?

Story Ideas

These were a couple of alternate location ideas I pitched for a troubled story. They were meant to suggest both location and mood.
The first one is the interior of a circus tent. An enclosed space where our heroes would need to face head-on their fears and overcome them. It would motivate them to think fast, and to move faster. Could have made a great action sequence.
The second was the interior of an old water tower. A contemplative moment where they would meet their reason to stop looking back and keep moving forward.

City Blues

What's that famous line..."there are a thousand stories in the Naked City.." Well this is a blue one.

Cold mountain

Our hero has to get up there, what more do we need to know?

Remy & the Rats

I really like the illustrations of Arthur Rackham, and the BG's of 101 Dalmatians. Unfortunately this attempt comes close to neither, but it was an exercise I gave myself. 1 finished illustration in 1 day.

I had an idea for a series and came up with this character.

Indiana Ruth

..yet another idea for a series.

My Peoples

Another piece of VizDev done for the project that never was. The story had a rustic flavor, so I thought perhaps the art should reflect that.

My Peoples

Another bit of early VizDev for a project that had a number of titles.
It never got made. I based this painting on a line drawing I did while still with Disney.

Hunchback

Another Hunchback drawing that started as a portfolio piece.

Hunchback

A Hunchback drawing that started as a portfolio piece and was actually finished after I got hired at Disney.
I thought it prudent to give them a credit.

Devil's Glen

One of a few ideas for an new story I just finished called "The Devil's Glen".
A seven page epic horror/thriller poem. Big market for those I'm sure.

3D Series VizDev

I needed to come up with some
futuristic yet prehistoric looking foliage.
I like the shapes and the strong color.
I think it gives them a"not-of-this-world look". And thats what we wanted.

Lilo & Stitch-1

Really early Viz-Dev....
I had no idea what the story was going to be,
nor were there any character designs.
About the only thing I knew was that this little Hawaiian girl was concerned about the environment, and was being raised by her sister.
I left a spot in the display case for an "alien"
(Stitch), and popped him in there much later.

VizDev for KITS...

more KITS VizDev...

VizDev Kingdom...

Another VizDev for Kingdom.
There was a pre-"Emperor's" Seq that took place in some catacombs....

Monday, August 14, 2006

This piece was done while at Disney, we were ramping up to what was then called Kingdom in the Sun.
The film was put on hold, and we were moved onto another film.
It was later put out as The Emperor's New Groove.
